Official Opening Dutch Design Workspace India
Dutch Design Workspace India opening in Mumbai
On 5 February 2012, the Dutch Design Workspace India (DDWI) in Mumbai officially opened its doors. Initiated by Dutch Design Fashion Architecture (DutchDFA), the Workspace is a home base for Dutch designers and design companies wanting to establish themselves in India.

Consul-General Marijke van Drunen Littel conducted the opening ceremony, together with Workspace Director Anuradha Gupta and DutchDFA programme director Christine de Baan. Preceding the official inauguration, Dutch and Indian designers including Caroline Bos (UN Studio), Rianne Makkink (Studio Makkink & Bey), Tjeerd Veenhoven, Anand Patel and Sudhir Sharma (INDI Design) gave short presentations about their work in the context of cross-cultural collaboration between the Netherlands and India.
Dutch Design Workspace India (DDWI)
The Workspace is located in Parel, a creative hotspot of Mumbai. At the Workspace, designers can hire workstations – for short and long term periods – complete with communal office facilities and receive India-specific business support from the Design Desk. A multi-functional space accommodates events, meetings and workshops. The Workspace is also open to Indian designers wanting to connect with design from the Netherlands. The interior, designed by Studio Makkink & Bey comprises a combination of Dutch and Indian designs. The library features books about design from India and the Netherlands. Designers and design companies working within the fields of design, fashion and architecture can now apply for rental of workstations and event space.
Workspace opening week program
During the opening week, The Netherlands Architecture Institute (NAi) will continue its Matchmaking India project with a workshop from 5-9 February. Five Dutch and five Indian architectural practices will explore low-cost housing scenarios in Mumbai. The final presentation will be held at the Workspace on 9 February.
On 7 February, a seminar about design and innovation for the Base of the Pyramid will be hosted at the Workspace, centering on the added value of design and designers in this process. Organised by the Netherlands Embassy, New Delhi.
