Fashion India - Holland: Tradition & Innovation

India is the second-largest country for fashion production in the world. Renowned fashion companies prefer to produce their clothes in India, not just because of lower costs but also due to the traditional craftsmanship, knowledge of materials and beautiful authentic handicraft. Because of the increasing role India plays in the world of fashion, it is important to familiarize today's fashion students with the Indian way of thinking. The Amsterdam Fashion Insitute has joined forces with Pearl Academy of Fashion in Delhi in the project Fashion India - Holland: Tradition & Innovation.

Six AMFI students reside in Delhi from September 2010 until January 2011. After following classes in Indian culture, fashion and politics, the Dutch students encorporate their new knowledge into a sustainable fashion collection influenced by both Dutch and Indian cultures.

The fashion collection was presented on 12 January 2011, along with the results of researh the students performed on how to bring Dutch companies closer to the Indian Fashion Industry. As a part of this presentaion, a selection of Dutch Profile videos on the context of the work of icons of Dutch design will introduce the visitors to the Dutch creative industry. Three fashion documentaries are matched to an architecture, product-design and graphic documentary to present a full range of work:

Alexander van Slobbe / Rem Koolhaas

G-Star / Philips

Francisco van Bentum / Irma Boom

In the second part of the project, four Indian students will stay in Amsterdam from February until July 2011 for an introduction to Dutch fashion culture.
