Light transmitting concrete
Press release:
Innovative Lighting Application
Recently the first application of light transmitting concrete in Dutch public space has been unveiled in Rotterdam. The material is used in lighting for orientation along a bank in a newly developed residential area. In line with the concrete used to border the lawn, lighted objects are created in light transmitting concrete to mark the passage ways to the parking lot.
Marieken Oostrom (currently employed at Vormtech) made the design for the municipality of Rotterdam. The project was triggered by the discussion whether or not to light the boulevard along the bank with lighting poles. The conclusion was to leave the area quite dark, this was possible due to the availability of well lit alternative routes in the area. This way, because of the relative darkness, there is a good view over the water. Also, the darkness means the energy consumption is very low. With just few lighting accents, a pleasant atmosphere is created in the area.
Light Transmitting Concrete
The concrete curbstone in the design has a double function. It borders the lawn but is also a sitting object. Light transmitting concrete with LED lighting was chosen for this project as a means of integrating the light into the concrete. The lighting objects were developed in cooperation with the company Cuprohaag.
