Layers
Text from A Piece of Toast:
I don’t consider myself a fabric nerd, probably because that was the part I always left to the last minute when doing my interior design projects in school, but I can spot Hella Jongerius’ textiles for Maharam a mile away. I first learned about her gorgeous collaboration fabrics with Maharam when a visiting fabric rep came to our design class… So far Hella has done three collections for Maharam: Repeat (a huge, bold pattern), Layers, and Borders (her latest design).
My absolute favorite of the three is Layers. Maharam describes the collection best: “Layers by Hella Jongerius consists of three embroidered patterns: Layers Garden, Layers Park and Layers Vineyard, available in a combination of single and double layer variations. Wool felt, the foundation of Layers, provides a neutral textural complement to the needlework of all variations and a graphic quality to the cut relief in the double variations. Jongerius often explores the theme of pairing both new and old techniques of production in her designs. The individual patterns of Layers recall various landscapes: Layers Garden is a large scale botanical. Layers Park alludes to garden planning and structures with its architectural framework of lines. Layers Vineyard has an irregular grid of circles.”
Yesterday I got to see Layers fabric used as upholstery for the first time in person… The textiles are UNREAL on furniture. So textural and detailed, it made the furniture pieces look so wicked - a little nod to traditionalism for the modern office space they were in. I don’t think my life will be complete without owning a piece of furniture covered in Hella’s Layers Park. After reading Kristin’s post the other day about huge ottoman envy I’m thinking it might be just the thing I want! And if I can’t get a furniture piece I guess I can always settle for a pair of Nike’s covered in Layers…
