Spijkers en Spijkers
The identical twins Riet and Truus Spijkers have gained international acclaim with their high fashion label “Spijkers and Spijkers”, that stands out with designs that are both sophisticated and functional, colourful and of a very graphic nature.
For the twins, every new collection is inspired by a distinct and powerful female figure from history.
For the new Spijkers and Spijkers collection, presented during the London Fashion Week, their muse was Sherazade, a legendary Persian queen and the storyteller of the Arabian Nights.
Spijkers and Spijkers is geared towards the self-assured, modern woman, who seeks to challenge the values of her gender. Although the status of women has undergone a radical change in the twentieth century, the sisters believe there is still sufficient emancipatory work to be done.
Arnhem’s museum of modern art recently exhibited a retrospective of ten years of the Spijkers and Spijkers label.
The dress has always been at the core of every new Spijkers and Spijkers collection. The dresses of Spijkers and Spijkers are immediately recognizable and perfectly cut to the female figure of every size.
Their acquaintance with the Memphis movement had a liberating influence on the two designers. The freedom of this movement was a big inspiration on their second label, called SiS.
