Dutch Design Awards in Istanbul

The exhibit of the Dutch Design Awards (DDA) 2010 was on show during Istanbul Design Week (IDW). From September 29 through to 2 October 2011 this venue hosted the ‘best of the best’ of Dutch Design, as part of an international tour of the exhibit, showing design the winners and finalists of the DDA in 2010. Next to the exhbition, a selection of Dutch Profile videos on icons of Dutch Design was presented in Istanbul.

The opening on Thursday September 29 was performed by Bert Pauli, Delegate of the Province of North-Brabant, and Mary Ann Schreurs, council member for Innovation, Culture and Public Space of the city of Eindhoven.. The international tour of the exhibit was combined with a trade mission organised by Design Cooperation Brainport and the Chamber of Commerce Noord-Brabant, focussing on global themes as energy, water, gaming, health and design.

TRENDS IN DESIGN

In the 2010 edition of the Dutch Design Awards, a number of recurring themes were recognised. In spatial design, the tendency for the designer to make his mark on the identity of public space is growing even stronger. Spatial designs become icons in the environment and are no longer just mechanical or infrastructural objects. In product design, a major focus on services and systems has developed, which causes products to become ‘services’ as well. Also the sustainability of the product and the application of sustainable materials remain topical issues. In the field of communication, 'social design' prevails. The user interaction is not only expressed in digital media, but also increasingly often in graphic design and visual identities.

INTERNATIONAL JURY

The selection committees consisted of professionals from the fields of Communication, Product and Spatial selected finalists per subcategory from the total supply of scouted work and online entries. The international jury then decided who were the best of the best in Dutch Design in 2010. The international jury 2010 was led by Frans Timmermans (chairman, The Netherlands), and comprised of Annina Koivu (Italy), Cara McCarty (USA), Hans van der Markt (the Netherlands), Marcus Fairs (UK), James Woudhuysen (UK), Oscar Pena (UK), Paolo Navone (Italy), Rajesh Kejriwal (India), Ravi Naidoo (South-Africa), Ruedi Baur (France), Timo de Rijk (the Netherlands), Vincent van Baar (the Netherlands), Will Erens (Belgium) and Walter Van Beirendonck (Belgium).

DUTCH DESIGN AWARDS

Dutch Design Awards (DDA) are internationally renowned prizes that are annually awarded by a professional jury to the very best in the field of Dutch Design. In this way, DDA provides a platform where the best of Dutch Design – across its full width – is recognised and exhibited. DDA consists of the competition and a festive Award Show, an exhibition featuring the works of finalists and winners during Dutch Design Week (which will later on travel to various design locations across the world), and the production of the Dutch Design Yearbook in collaboration with Nai Publishers. DDA is produced by Design Cooperation Brainport.
